Reinhilde Van Grieken: The Church, 2015-2018
The Church and All Its Godiness
A series of sculptures that look like religious objects although she is not religious herself. These are very intriguing ceramics in which she denounces the abuse of children by powerful people, as for instance in the church. Those ceramics are, on purpose very aesthetic, almost majestic and tempting. They are partially covered with ceramic transfers showing Google Latin texts of newspaper articles, pictures of religious scenes and the floor plan of a church. They are abundantly covered with goldluster and in some sculptures one can find traces of a cross. The use of goldluster suggests the pomp of many catholic churches. It distracts the attention from the rather unpleasant message. The spectator has to thoroughly analyse the colors, motives and forms to be able to get through to the heart of the sculpture. If he does not, he just sees a flashy, gold colored, decorative object.
