Lauren Herzak-Bauman: Amor Fati, 2018
Recently, I am drawn to the concept of amor fati, Latin for love of one’s fate, as a gateway for initial conceptual exploration. It is a philosophy that everything that happens in life is good and necessary, including hardships. Translated through my artistic process, amor fati characterizes the process of making, failing, and accepting certain outcomes.
I explore the concept of amor fati through a body of work based on grids and cubes, forms that are seemingly perfect or unflawed. I build these pieces by hand, choosing to allow the human nature of handwork to come through in the inevitable imperfections. The resulting sculptures are imperfect representations of these perfect forms, forcing me to accept the flaws as my fate as an artist, and a good and necessary part of my process.
