Job Description Summary
The Art Area in the Humanities Department at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) invites applications for a continuing tenure- track faculty position in Art, with an emphasis in Ceramics, starting August 2022. This position will play a vital role in leading the ceramics program and developing the new space in Marlboro Hall upon its completion.
We are searching for someone who can teach Ceramics I & II, and rotate teaching Three-Dimensional Design, and any other courses the candidate is qualified to teach. Additionally, we are eager to hire someone who has exciting approaches to ceramics and 3D Art and an interest in community engagement. Professional duties include serving on college committees, working on department and area projects, attending assigned meetings, advising students, supervision of the ceramic’s lab and curriculum, and general stewardship of the area. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.
Continuing Tenure Track: Faculty hired on 2-year conditional track, upon successful performance and evaluation, the hires may continue towards tenure track, and is renewable each year for two years.
Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education, training, credentials, and/or experience that meets the needs and requirements of the department in the content areas of art and ceramics is described below. Official documentation of credentials and degrees may be requested; degrees are recognized only if earned at an accredited institution.
- MFA degree (or higher) in Art/Ceramics, or a closely related field.
- Ability to teach Ceramics courses.
- Ability to teach in non-traditional formats (online, remote, hybrid) and settings (off-campus, weekends, evenings, and accelerated).
- Ability to teach Introduction to Art, the basic course, as needed.
- Ability to perform a range of physical positions and mobile conditions including but not limited to occasionally moving materials 5-25 pounds.
- Knowledge of and the ability to teach, handle, run, and maintain Art/Ceramics-related materials, chemicals, and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- One year full-time or equivalent part-time teaching experience at the post-secondary level in foundations and humanities courses.
Criteria
The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be invited for an interview. - Extent and relevance of educational preparation to anticipated teaching assignments.
- Relevance of teaching experience to anticipated teaching assignments in a variety of information technology areas.
- Relevance of non-teaching professional experience to anticipated teaching assignments. Examples: Curriculum development, interdisciplinary engagement, work with grant-funded programs, industry certification.
- Evidence of quality teaching, including faculty evaluation scores and ratings, teaching awards earned, face-to-face and online courses designed, developed, and/or revised, etc.
- Evidence of knowledge of and experience in employing instructional methods and techniques appropriate to different student learning styles. Examples: Cooperative learning, online teaching, and group projects.
- Evidence of currency in the professional discipline through industry certification, continuing education, professional development, and/or scholarly activity.
- The extent of expertise and/or teaching experience in the following areas:
- Ability to teach a range of ceramic techniques including but not limited to hand-building, wheel-throwing, and glazing techniques
- Ability to teach a range of hand-building techniques and processes related to figurative ceramics and conceptual approaches to the medium
- Knowledge of technology, terminology, concepts, and practices of ceramics and sculpture
- Ability to manage all aspects of a ceramics lab utilizing gas and electric kilns, as well as supervision of lab technicians, scheduling of student employees, oversight of safety protocol, and equipment maintenance
- Record of professional accomplishment and creative activities, which may include exhibitions, publications, commissions, and awards
- Experience and commitment to creating a diverse learning environment supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to participate in professional development activities and serve on academic committees or councils
- Willingness to work on and create an innovative curriculum that meets students’ needs and matches professional standards.
- Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with other academic programs and/or the community.
Candidates for teaching positions who are invited for an interview will be asked to demonstrate their teaching effectiveness in a simulated classroom laboratory, or other relevant pedagogical situation, the conditions of which will be determined in advance and shared with all candidates prior to the interview. In addition to the criteria listed below, other information gained from and observations made during the interview process, including the review committee’s assessment of simulated teaching performance, may be considered in selecting candidates to be recommended for appointment.

- Degree from an accredited institution.
- Unofficial transcripts must accompany applications for teaching positions. Before an applicant can be recommended for hire, he/she must have an unofficial transcript on file with the college. Official transcripts of academic work are required upon an offer of employment.
- Ability to teach days, evenings, weekends, or online.
- Ability to effectively communicate in spoken and written standard English.
