Jackie Brown explores our relationship to the world around us through biomorphic sculptures that blur boundaries between the real and the imagined. In 2018, Brown received a Lighton International Artist Exchange Program Award to spend three months as an artist-in-residence at the European Ceramic Work Center in the Netherlands. She is also the recipient of a Maine Artist Fellowship and additional residencies include time at the Archie Bray Foundation and in the Artist Studios at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. Brown received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and her BA from Hamilton College. She currently lives in Maine where she is an Associate Professor at Bowdoin College.

At the heart of my work is a love of materiality and an ongoing fascination with processes of growth and transformation in nature. Engaging with raw physical material is essential to this exploration and my studio practice relies heavily on experimentation and discovery. Through abstraction I aim to draw parallels between systems of growth and to create tension between the physical and the psychological. Recent work is compelled by the way that clay is a shapeshifter – a material that morphs and molds and mimics its environment and I believe wholeheartedly in arts capacity to enrich the way we see, experience, and understand the world around us.
