The Department of Art and Design at Southern Utah University, an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Ceramics who will participate in advancing and growing our studio arts program. This position is full-time, 9-month, tenure track. The desired start date is August 16, 2023. Salary is commensurate with qualifications & experience; excellent benefits.
Southern Utah University is a comprehensive, regional master degree-granting university located in Cedar City, Utah. It is an accredited, state-supported institution with an enrollment of 10,000+ students and home to the newly opened Southern Utah Museum of Art. Surrounded by national parks, monuments, forests and wilderness areas that draw millions of visitors annually from around the world and home to the Utah Shakespeare Festival, SUU is only 40 minutes from great snow skiing and year-round golfing. It is located 2 12 hours from Las Vegas and 3 12 hours from Salt Lake City.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Teach the equivalent of 6 studio courses each year. Due to program enrollment numbers, several courses will be stacked to generate enough student enrollment for a normal teaching load.
• The workload will be a 3/3 course load, plus time devoted to firing kilns and managing the ceramics studio.
• Invite and host speakers for Art Insights, the department’s visiting artist program General programmatic advising for ceramics/sculpture majors

• Participate in service, activities, and projects for the Department of Art and Design.
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Earned Master of Fine Arts Degree in ceramics.
• Two years of teaching experience at the collegiate level.
• A successful record of professional activity and research in their field.
• Intricate knowledge of traditional and contemporary ceramic history
• Well versed in hand building, throwing (beginning, intermediate, and advanced), glaze chemistry, mold making and slip-casting, art/craft/cultural theory.
• Experience in teaching low fire, mid-range, and high fire techniques.
• Knowledge and ability to safely run and maintain electric, gas, and wood fire kilns. Interested in joining a highly motivated community of faculty, staff, and students who value excellence in the studio arts.

Preferred Qualifications:
• The online application will require the submission of three references with contact information.
• The successful candidate must bring a broad artistic understanding of ceramics as a critical art form in the 21st century and strong technical knowledge of ceramic techniques.
• Candidates should have a strong background in ceramic methodology, with an ability to demonstrate ceramics methods and speak to contemporary practices across genres.
• The candidate will also have a thorough knowledge of three-dimensional design, as there will be the possibility to teach classes within the foundations core.
• Candidate must be able to manage the loading and unloading of clay shipments. They must also be able to handle the demands of loading and unloading kilns. Additionally, they must be able to handle the physicality of working with the clay medium.
