Hasan Şahbaz: Organic Objects, 2011-2017
The “Organic Objects” series consists of works that start with a technique, progress and then surpass that technique and transform into a new form language. This series began with the idea and trials of producing my own perforated brick forms with the plaster mold casting method during the experimental work process with porous wall bricks taken from the factory as raw. In this method, first the plaster mold pieces that form the outer walls of the form are prepared, then dozens of thin plaster rods are arranged vertically like dominoes to create the cellular internal spaces in the body of the form. The colored casting clay is carefully poured into the mold from a central point between the plaster rods. In this method, the clay poured into the mold is not emptied again. When the plaster mold pieces absorb the water of the clay and the clay hardens, the plaster rods are removed, the mold is opened and porous forms are obtained. Initially, the works that started with circular plaster molds have emerged with the addition of plaster mold pieces that are compatible with each other like legos, which have the potential to produce a new form each time.
The forms in the “Organic Objects” series establish a connection with the porous bricks used in the walls of architectural structures as their starting point, but they do not have regular geometric shapes like them. For this reason, they cannot form a real wall or space by being lined up side by side or on top of each other, and they gain a metaphorical content due to the textural bond established. This series, where experimentation is always at the forefront during the production phase, is also intertwined with a kind of game concept. Each form, which is exhibited by being raised 1-2 cm from the ground on a horizontal plane and by applying full overhead lighting, gains a new dimension and reality with the silhouette shadow falling on the ground.
