Janny Baek: Mirages and Other Half-Truths, 2021
I’m fascinated by the idea of a mirage because it is a multi-layered visual fabrication: an actual optical distortion that is in turn interpreted, or misinterpreted, by the viewer. I’m intrigued by the malleability of our perceptions, and our reliance on our own fluid and changeable agendas when crafting our internal narratives. Accepting that our stories are always some shifting combination of fabrication, imagination, artifice and truth allows for opportunities in expressing our complex dreams. Each of my pieces is a short visual story, transformed with each retelling, and based as much in fantasy as in reality.
