Laura Pehkonen: Domino, 2021
Domino is a large-scale wall relief. The parts of the work are pieces left over from many of my different projects or created during them, with which I have tested different techniques or materials in ceramics. These pieces come up in a surprising amount during my projects, and it has been my idea to make this kind of a larger scale collage-like work with them.
The ensemble came about by bringing all my ceramic pieces to the spot, unpacking them from their boxes, and improvising the piece combinations on the spot. Once the fascinating combination was found, I attached it to the wall in the formation I had outlined.
I am inspired by the different combinations of ceramic materials, shapes, colors and contrasts that these unique pieces make up. The title of the piece, Domino, refers to a game of the same name, in which a piece is placed after the piece set by the previous player, and thus the game progresses and forms an organically serpentine queue.
The work has been created as part of the Concreate 2021 festival, which is organized by Helsinki Urban Art and the Kera collective. The work is part of the collections of the EMMA Museum of Modern Art in Espoo.
