Myung-Joo Kim: Miroir de Joie, 2022
Miroir de joie, after an artist residency at Ecole d’art du Beauvaisis, France, 2022, is the title of a solo exhibition I did at the Rostropovich Auditorium in Beauvais.
I don’t particularly try to anchor my work in a religious interpretation, but I was nevertheless inspired to use this premise after reading the poem “Le Miroir de Jésus”. The poem “Mystères du Rosaire” by Catholic playwright Henri Ghéon (1875-1944) was set to minimalist music for a female choir by composer André Caplet (1878-1925) in 1923. It refers to the theme of the Virgin Mary’s meditations and the mysteries she experienced through the sacrificial life of Jesus Christ, whom she saw as one of her many “mirrors”.
What I noticed while reading the poems was that they were very visual. The poem inspired me to make drawings and create my own imagination of the figures and lilies in the crypt.
I chose to title the largest of the main sculptures after this verse: “So naked on this earth”, “I left him in the grass”, “He will surprise death” . The meanings are, in order, the moment of human birth, when we are born with only fragile skin, the way we live with nature and the fateful accompaniment of death during life, and the meaning of the human soul after death. All represented by imaginary characters.
