Nitsa Meletopoulos: Stones Smell Good When You Cuddle Them, 2023
Solo show by Nitsa Meletopoulos at La Tôlerie in Clermont-Ferrand, France, May-July 2023.
It’s seething with fire now, minerals softened by the shock. Stones often form this way, from other stones. Rocks, vessels, jugs… And there remain deep hollows with lips burning on the edge, cute cavities with glazed bellies. The first crater vases filled in, overflowing with the broth, the gurgling mixture, where carbon cement proliferates. The vibrant mud illuminates lichens and slits. It hands out acids and makes granite foam. And in the dry cold, crack! Everything falls into pieces, pebbles, shards, specks of dust. The cosmic toy tea set nestles back in the recesses, in the pleats of warm rifts, feeding other glasses; the stones suckled by those who mull and drink. Thank you Aldous Harding for the title, borrowed and twisted for the softness of stones, real or fake.
