Sakari Kannosto: Oblivion, 2023
My trip to New York to install my exhibition in the fall of 2022 guided me to the border of the past and the future. The endless rows of high-rise buildings and the atmosphere of New York’s Financial district led me to a new topic: to the edge of past civilizations, where the ancient cities of the gods and mirror houses have dimmed under a new era. There, the former symbols of power and money have turned into ruins of ancient civilizations that have been taken over by nature.
I prepared the first three-part series of works on the theme Dreams of the Outer Suburb, Babel I-III, for the exhibition organized by the Arabian Art Department Association in Hvitträsk in honor of the 150th anniversary of the famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. The series was also exhibited in the Arabian art department’s jubilee exhibition, where I developed the subject further, and thus, the structures took a step in the direction of time travel and science fiction. The series will be continued next year in my solo exhibition in Helsinki at Gallery Sculptor.
