Sam Lucas: Selected works, 2018-2024
Same Same but Different – AWARD, British Ceramics Biennial, 2019

Sam’s forms are conversation pieces with dark humorous undertones, exploring how displacement is not only geographical but also an experience within one’s own skin. Drawing from personal experience and observations of others, Lucas investigates these ideas while celebrating the humor and beauty of diversity.
Taste Contemporary at Art Genève, 2020

Lucas’s work explores and expresses the weight and awkwardness of being within the body. She utilizes the clay body and glazes through form, surface, and scale, with material properties that emulate emotional states on the skin—such as clamminess, goosebumps, or tension—reflecting responses to social situations, anxiety, or uncertainty. More recently, Lucas has incorporated materials like textile and steel, further exploring the notion of being hidden and contained.
Strange Stranger, 2018-2019

Sam Lucas’s work, Strange Stranger, explores the weight and awkwardness of being in the body, the pain this alienation can cause, and, ironically, the beauty and humor that emerge from this diversity.
These objects may make you stop and stare, drawn by curiosity and inquisitiveness. You may feel slightly confused, bemused, unnerved, or even disturbed by their uncanny nature and refusal to conform.
Lucas creates work that is more about being than being seen. These forms capture frozen moments in time, their position unfixed—both reaching out to the world and bound to themselves, caught in a game of cat and mouse with nowhere to hide from perpetual anxiety. Only humor can save you.
