Fahrenheit 2024 is on view at the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, CA
January 20 – September 8, 2024
AMOCA is pleased to present Fahrenheit 2024, the revival of their juried exhibition. Launched in 2018, Fahrenheit 2018 received an overwhelming response and showcased over 80 artists’ best ceramic creations juried by Patti Warashina. This year, AMOCA features the talents of 100 artists contributing to the contemporary ceramic arts community. We are honored that Kathy King, Director of the Ceramics Program at Harvard University, is the esteemed juror for this year’s exhibition.
King commented, “With the ability to review each work visually while accessing the applicants’ biographic information and statements, I was impressed by the depth of honesty and vulnerability shared…. As we navigate the disquiet of opposing political discourse in today’s world, I appreciated those who chose to share their perspectives, using their work as a platform. I was particularly impressed by the diversity of ideas. The variety of perspectives shared gave me hope that through art, we still have a space to share diverse opinions.”
Within the scope of Fahrenheit 2024, AMOCA presents a range of works from artists both established and lesser-known. Selected artists include Jeremy R. Brooks, Adam Chau, Misty Gamble, Cindy Leung, Peter Olson, Chidi Ukwuoma, Sarah-Anne Winchester, and Shiyuan Xu. This exhibition provides an invaluable platform for showcasing a diverse range of work, fostering recognition within the ceramics community.
Executive Director Beth Ann Gerstein shared, “It’s a privilege to show pieces created by this group of vibrant, contemporary artists. Exhibitions like this one, created through open calls, encourage new and established artists to be in conversation with one another as they also work to contribute to the larger ceramic art community. In Fahrenheit 2024, viewers will be invited to consider traditional and innovative practices in ceramics, witnessing the range of creativity, technique, and inspiration these contemporary ceramic artists draw upon.”
Fahrenheit 2024 presents 100 pieces selected by juror Kathy King from hundreds submitted in response to AMOCA’s open call. The selected pieces created by contemporary artists range from more traditional vase and vessel forms to large-scale wall installations. While all pieces are mainly ceramic, visitors to Fahrenheit 2024 will encounter additional materials including hair, insulated wire, audio components, wax candles, a zip tie, and found objects. The Fahrenheit 2024 “Best of Show” Award recipient, Carly Slade, will receive a solo exhibition in the Igal & Diane Silber Vault Gallery at AMOCA in 2025-26.
Complementing the in-person exhibition experience, numerous public and educational programs will be mounted, including lectures, artist conversations, college-level tours, and tours for Title 1 schools serving grades K-12.
