Marsden Woo presents an exhibition by Philip Eglin
November 5, 2020 – January 2021
Marsden Woo is delighted to present a new body of work by renowned ceramicist Philip Eglin. In his latest collection the artist is revisiting the making of Castell Carreg Cennen, a castle-form piece from 2003 and the only square piece he has ever made. The saying ‘an Englishman’s home is his castle’ has taken on a more poignant meaning for him throughout the lockdown period, and given he now lives in Wales, feels it is even more appropriate to be re-making a work about a Welsh castle.
This presentation also comprises a range of bottle forms referencing elements of his collection of galvanised watering cans and plastic bottles; the latter found washed up around the Gower Peninsula from which he has created a bank of moulds. These pieces are hand-built from pressed details, in a similar approach (although on a much larger scale) to the making of his past series of medieval inspired jugs. These new forms acknowledge and take reference from both 18th century glass bottles and contemporary throwaway plastic ones in the artist’s distinctive lively expressive style.
Philip Eglin studied at Staffordshire Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. His ceramic works reflect and comment on contemporary culture. References are made to an array of sources including Northern Gothic religious woodcarvings, Chinese export porcelain, English folk ceramics and the language of symbols used on contemporary packaging. His most recent work explores juxtapositions of imagery related to football, religion and sex.
Eglin exhibits internationally and his work can be found in major private and public collections including the Stedelijk Museum, the Netherlands, Mint Museum, USA, British Council, London, National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He was winner of the prestigious Jerwood Prize for Applied Arts: Ceramics in 1996.
Viewings are by appointment only from 2 December, subject to change in the event of an extension to current UK lockdown measures.
