Odd and Even – A Collection is on view at Maison Louis Carré, Paris
September 5 – November 28, 2021
Taste Contemporary, in association with Maison Louis Carré, is proud to present Odd and Even – a Collection, a group exhibition of sculptural objects and artworks that explores the notion of how the contradictory can also be complimentary.
The exhibition takes place at Maison Louis Carré, the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto’s sole work in France. The house, commissioned by the French art dealer and collector Louis Carré in 1956 as a private residence for his third wife, Olga, and their art collection, is today managed by the Alvar Aalto Association in France. During a visit to the house in 2019, Founder and Director of Taste Contemporary, Monique Deul and curator Cécile Franken considered how collections can reflect individual personalities and taste while also sitting side by side in perfect harmony. Responding to the idea of bringing different and very distinct voices together to create a contemporary collection, Odd and Even – a Collection presents two different aesthetics; one bold and intense, the other quiet and serene.
The exhibition features artists such as Virginia Leonard and Michael Brennand-Wood, whose works employ a vivid palette; Leonard, in the creation of her intensely emotional and emotive sculptural pieces and Brennand-Wood, who layers materials in constructions that deal with notions of decoration, politics and society. Textile artist Ptolemy Mann also captures powerful ‘colourfields’ within a constructed surface. For this exhibition she has created a unique series of hand dyed and woven thread paintings inspired by the colour palette developed by Alvar Aalto with the artist Eino Kauria for The Paimio Sanatorium in Finland. These brightly coloured works contrast with pieces that are quiet and contemplative such as an exquisite pair of contained boxes in lost wax cast glass and fine bone china by Andrea Walsh, whose work questions ideas of containment on an intimate scale and a series of perfectly altered and refined objects in wood by the late Maria van Kesteren.
