Responsibilities
• Active professional research resulting in engagement in the broader fields of ceramics and art via significant exhibitions and publications at the national level.
• Teaching sculptural approaches to forming and construction.
• Teaching a broad array of surfacing techniques.
• Collaborative development of curriculum including incorporating your own research topics.
Teaching all levels of ceramics from beginning through advanced as well as graduate students.
• Effectively mentoring BA, BFA, and MFA students including serving on and chairing BFA and MFA thesis committees.
• Performing service to the department, college, university, and the profession.
Qualifications
• MFA in Studio Art or related field. Applicants should have an active professional record, clear evidence of excellence in teaching, strong communication and leadership skills, and an interest and understanding of a wide array of curricular and artistic methodologies.
• Interest in teaching in the Ceramics focus area within an interdisciplinary context and possess knowledge of the evolving history, criticism and theories of visual art and craft.
• The candidate must maintain an active professional record of exhibitions and/or publications. • Leadership and curriculum development that considers the broad range of academic and artistic interests of our students is expected.
• Proficiency with electric, gas, and alternative firing processes.
• Knowledge and ability to teach ceramic chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications
• We are particularly interested in candidates whose creative practice engages discourses that have been historically under-represented.
• We are also interested in candidates who will engage with research and teaching opportunities across the broad range of disciplines this public research university offers, while also offering opportunities for students to explore community involved practices.

The Department of Art within the College of Fine Arts at Florida State University seeks applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Ceramics to start in August of 2025. We invite applications from artist-educators who are committed to contemporary technical and conceptual approaches within the field of ceramics while honoring the medium’s rich history. The candidate’s research and expertise would ideally fall within the sculptural realm of ceramic practice. This could include object making, installation, social practice, figurative, and/or digital or new media approaches. The ideal candidate would complement and amplify the existing interdisciplinary curriculum within our undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Department of Art confers BA, BFA, and MFA (3-year) Studio Art degrees. Our top-ranked programs encourage interdisciplinary investigations across a wide range of concentrations spanning Book Arts, Ceramics, Drawing, Electronic Art, Moving Image, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture.
