Clarke University seeks qualified candidates for a visiting assistant professorship in Art and Compass (Clarke’s general education program). The successful candidate will possess an MFA or terminal degree in Ceramics or Sculpture (required at time of hire) and demonstrated expertise in both ceramic and sculpture processes and techniques. The hire will also teach in Clarke’s general education program, with courses specific to Compass. Successful teaching experience at the college level is beneficial, and the ability to offer coursework in digital fabrication is desired. Courses are typically rotated within a 3/3 teaching load with intermediate and advanced courses stacked.
Candidates should be experienced with firing/maintaining gas and electric kilns, implementing safety training, metal fabrication techniques, woodshop, time-based media, hand building, throwing-on-the wheel, and environmental safety policies. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the materials and equipment in the ceramics and sculpture studios. Strong writing skills are also desired.
Ceramics studios includes 12 electric wheels, slab roller, extruder, and hand building assembly area. The adjacent kiln room includes 4 electric kilns, a Bailey gas shuttle kiln, ceramic glaze spray booth and ventilation. Glaze studio has both cone 04 and cone 10 glazes with a glaze formulation table and chemicals for glaze mixing. Glaze room also has space for mold making and casting for both ceramics and sculpture applications. The Sculpture studios include an assembly area, full woodshop, metal fabrication area, and outdoor courtyard. Woodshop includes a SawStop table saw, band saw, compound miter saw, stationary sanding machine, drill press, radial arm saw, clamps, hand tools, and proper ventilation. The metal shop includes a MIG welder, Oxy-Acetlyene torches, stationary vise, hand tools, and ventilation. Digital capabilities include a laser cutter, 3D printer, and video software for editing. There is also a storage area for student work.
The Art + Design Program at Clarke offers a comprehensive, undergraduate programs in studio art, graphic design, digital media studies and a minor in interdisciplinary arts. Compass offers students a personalized approach to their education as they prepare for life after graduation.
